About Barikisu

Barikisu grew up in Ghana, West Africa, and like many young girls she quickly developed an interest in hair, make-up and fashion. But the interest stayed with her:

“I have known what I wanted to do since childhood and started as a hairdressing apprentice right after school,” Barikisu explains. “I trained for two years and then continued working for myself under different conditions, which has now given me more than 17 years of experience in the hairdressing profession.”

Barikisu came to Denmark in 1998 and spent the first couple of years learning the Danish language and getting to know Danish culture. Gradually she began working with Danish hairdressing schools, first by instructing teachers and later by teaching students. In 2003 she became a consultant for a large African hair show at The Black Diamond in Copenhagen. This led to other shows in cities such as Næstved, Esbjerg and Copenhagen, where Barikisu typically prepares 6–8 models and demonstrates techniques unique to African hair artistry: twist, cornrows, braid & leave, weave-on, water curls and more.

Hairdressing School in Copenhagen

“In 2002 I began teaching at the Hairdressing School on Glentevej through the Danish Hairdressers’ Union. Communicating and discussing hair culture is very important to me, and I enjoy being part of an environment where everyone wants to give their best and where we inspire and develop each other through creative dialogue.”

Alongside her teaching, Barikisu completed the four-year Danish hairdressing education and can therefore present certificates from both Ghana and Denmark.

Hair Salon in Central Copenhagen

At the beginning of 2007, the dream of owning her own salon finally became reality when Barikisu Hair opened its doors in central Copenhagen. The collaboration with the Danish Hairdressers’ and Beauticians’ Union has also continued, including projects focused on improving working conditions for hairdressers in Ghana.

A Versatile Hairdresser

Barikisu is deeply passionate about her profession and enjoys sharing her knowledge and ideas with others: “One of the reasons I created this website is to show examples of my work. If this has sparked your interest, I would love to hear from you.” At Barikisu Hair, the salon offers both traditional hair services such as haircuts and treatments, as well as extensions, braiding and other African hair specialties.
