Cornrows
Cornrows are a popular braiding technique where the hair is braided closely along the scalp. The technique creates a distinctive pattern that resembles the rows on a corn cob, which is also the origin of the name. Cornrows can be customised in many ways – you can use your own hair or add synthetic hair for extra volume or a specific style. The size and direction of the braids can vary, and cornrows can be combined with other techniques to create a unique look.
Braids
Braids are one of the most well-known techniques in African hairstyling. Here the hair is braided in loose hanging sections, unlike cornrows where the hair is braided tightly along the scalp. The possibilities for variation are endless, and braids can be styled in many different ways depending on your style and needs.
Ca La Ca La
Ca La Ca La is a further development of traditional braiding, where thread or fibre hair is wrapped around the braids. This creates a unique finish and gives the hairstyle a distinctive and eye-catching expression.
Twist
Twist is a technique where the hair is twisted rather than braided. Only two sections of hair are used, which are twisted together. Twists can be made as cornrows close to the scalp or as loose hanging twisted sections, creating a beautiful and natural look.
Braid and Leave / Hair Extensions / Hair Attachments
This technique combines braiding with loose hair and is often used to extend the hair (extensions). The hair is first braided approximately 3 cm from the scalp, after which the remaining hair is left loose. This method creates a beautiful lengthening of the hair with a soft and natural appearance.
Water Curls
Water Curls are a variation of Braid and Leave, where a special type of synthetic hair is used. After braiding, several sections are braided together and dipped in boiling water, creating a beautiful curling effect that gives the hairstyle a lively and wavy appearance.
Dreadlocks
Dreadlocks are a hairstyle where the hair is intentionally allowed to form dense, matted strands. This style, which is deeply rooted in the Rastafari movement, gives the hair a powerful and distinctive look. In Africa, dreadlocks have historically been associated with the homeless and social outcasts, but today they have become a symbol of culture, strength and identity.
